→ instead of

→ turning only to new technologies

→ traditional buildings

I think は不要。

→ shouldだけ。

Instead of turning only to new technologies, young architects should learn a lot from traditional buildings.

Sample Question

The legacy of ancient Rome is so deeply embedded in contemporary society that we seldom pause to acknowledge it. Institutions that originated in a civilization which reached its height nearly two thousand years ago have undergone countless transformations, yet many of their underlying assumptions persist. What survives is not always immediately identifiable with its ancient source, for centuries of adaptation have obscured the connection.

Nevertheless, the remnants are unmistakable if only we know how to interpret them. Just as an archaeologist reconstructs a vanished society from fragments whose significance may escape the casual observer, so we can discern the presence of Rome in customs and institutions that appear entirely modern.

How to

Points

■Nevertheless, the remnants are unmistakable if only we know how to interpret them.

how to interpret them のthem は、the remnantsを指す。

■Just as an archaeologist reconstructs a vanished society from fragments whose significance may escape the casual observer,

Just as A, so B は「ちょうどAであるのと同様、Bである」。

■so we can discern the presence of Rome in customs and institutions that appear entirely modern.

the presence of Rome that appear entirely modern
